I might end up DNFing this one. I liked the first book, but so far this one feels as if the characters have gone backwards in intelligence. Half the time some statements and decisions the characters are making are just dumb. James spent a lot of time in the first book talking about how he finally understands how humans think now. But in this book, I feel like he still doesn't get it. And it's annoying.

The story is well written, but it is taking me a lot longer to read than I initially thought because of the subject matter. Part of the story is set in WWII in the POV of a Jewish character and right now, hearing these characters disbelief that these things could happen that racism or hate could go that far and getting caught up in it because they refused to believe is hitting a little too close to home in the US.
