Definitely recommend the Michael Katz translation. Constance Garnett’s writing is so wooden and antiquated (in a bad way).

Seems to be a book about how our perceptions of things past, present and future shape a distorted reality. It explores our inherent and nonsensical tendency to violence. A fuckin kick in the teeth, this one.

The sparse prose is a perfect refresher after Infinite Jest. The matter of fact style makes it feel so lonely and brutal.

Gratuitous!! I’m all for using challenging and offensive stories/words for impact, but he uses so many disturbing things as cheap devices to make a simple point. Amazing writing for the most part, but jesus dude, some of this stuff is brought up so flippantly it makes me sick. Still on a role with the slurs, I should’ve kept count.

Alright, it’s pretty good.

A slow building reprieve, a brief glimpse of companionship. Of course it would lead to crushing despair. Fun read so far!

Certain things are so predictable in this book, but Dostoevsky drops them in such a way that they still catch you off guard. His unique structure is so exciting. It lulls you in to false security and then hits you over the head with one chaotic event bleeding in to the next. Honestly sad to be nearing the end of this one

The interrogation scenes are soooo good. It is so tense, you can imagine how hard your heart would be pounding in Raskolnikov’s position.
Also, just so many terrible people with different motivations and justifications.

Don’t make me fucking cry. Also, this man’s life is over.

Did not expect to like this one so much. So far this might turn out to be one of my all time favorites. Started out slow, a build-up so meandering and uneventful that I thought I might hate this book, but then it took off like hell. A Classic for a reason, I guess.

Enthralling, dizzying, hilarious and disturbing. Is this a story about how one can be imprisoned by their own guilt even though they live a “free” life?
Is it a straightforward commentary on bureaucracy and/or how ignorant the general public is to legal process and how those in power keep it more easily if they keep the masses confused? So many feeling and thoughts immediately. Great so far!!
