"Callum grinned, then looked down at the frying pan. The rashers were overcooked, and the yoke had turned solid."

Were the oxen straining at the yolk? C'mon folks. This isn't Little League.

I've read this before. The character names and the plot. I didn't read the excerpt that was released earlier in May, so where have I read this? Was it a short story, or chapter released in a magazine or something? What? Those character names don't appear in Sea of Rust, so it can't be that.

It's driving me nuts that I can't figure out how I'm already familiar with a book I've been anxiously waiting to be released.

Like visiting friends you haven't seen in a very long time. You worry it will be awkward, or that you won't have much in common any more. But after only a few minutes, it feels like you'd never left.

As someone who has only read the novels and one of the novellas, I am I supposed to be able to understand what the actual hell is going on here?

"I have strong views about not tempting providence and, as a wise man once said, the difference between luck and a wheelbarrow is, luck doesn’t work if you push it."

I really, really want to start reading the new "Edges" book (that begins the Inverted Frontier series), but just knowing the Nanotech Succession series is looking at me with its puppy-dog eyes won't, in good conscience, let me do so. I know the author says Edges is a good "jumping on" point for new readers, but I still can't bring myself to do it.

A slave to my own compulsions. *sigh*

I'm a little embarrassed to admit how much the very first sentence of this book bummed me out.
