I went into this expecting something captivating, riveting, gripping, etc., based on the reviews. Are we reading the same book? Pacing is glacial. Each chapter, a different airport, a different hotel, a new corridor carpet to admire. Jewel-toned paisley versus red-and-gold patterns, who cares? Still waiting for this to get good....

Wildly original, wickedly clever, and irresistibly entertaining—proof that even murder can be darkly funny with a playful edge.

Not Quite Dead Yet

Who knew a book about a man accidentally publishing his own obituary would be this funny or this tender? The humor lands sharply, but what surprises me most is the heart. Beneath the snappy dialogue is a thoughtful meditation on grief, regret, and the strange relief of starting over. If you like your novels witty, warm, and quietly profound, this one is a gem.

I’d long (and wrongly) believed that Lincoln’s inauguration set off the Southern states’ secession. I hadn’t appreciated how much tension had already been building beforehand, or that South Carolina had actually left the Union under President Buchanan. There were numerous events preceding Lincoln's presidency that had already provoked significant fear, hostility, and distrust in the South.

Interesting so far. This isn’t the breakneck pace I usually read at—there’s a lot to absorb here, lol. It’s slow going, but definitely good.

Wow—disturbing revelations about the ‘exalted’ Southern politician who coined the phrase ‘Cotton is King.’ It wasn’t enough that he was one of the south's most ardent supporters of slavery, and a brutal slave owner himself, but he was a pedophile who kept detailed, unapologetic accounts of the assaults in his diary. Sickening.

I’m looking forward to reading this. It makes me nostalgic for watching The Civil War by Ken Burns on PBS with my Dad when it first aired in 1990. That documentary inspired a family trip to Gettysburg, where we toured the Gettysburg National Military Park. My brothers climbed over the rocks at Devil’s Den while I experienced the heebie-jeebies, lol, and we visited the Lincoln Train Museum and the Jennie Wade House.

Wow. Another twist. It’s like someone tossed a grenade into the plot and now we’re sifting through the emotional wreckage. Confusion everywhere—in the best way.

Think "Strangers on a Train" meets Thelma & Louise—and that’s just Amanda and "Wendy’s" storyline. Equally riveting are the unraveling lives of Ruth, Farrow, and Scott. An addictive, multilayered thriller.
