The book had it's good moments but otherwise fell flat. Because the timeline shifts often, the narrative is fragmented and a lot of things get repeated over and over again. Also the connection to Japanese folklore is very interesting but is not integrated as smoothly as I would like. It feels occasionally like it takes precedent over the story rather than being an aid. I want to give it 3.5 stars.
