It's early in but I love this book already. The dialog between Irene and Michel is painful, legit stomach churning and foreshadow of what is will be an absolutely hideous relationship.

It sped up around pg 55-60 and now I am in it!

Slower then expected but good. Might be the dense text that makes the pages feel long despite it being a curious story.

The tempo can shift like tides while reading this but it is easy to lock in and I have started to notice a strong feeling developing in me like this story is settling in my bones.

This book evades actual friendship. Is this a proof of European relationships as inherently devious and spiteful even from youth, even towards their own kind?

This is not a friendship.

Just as the culture, history, and people of occupied nations disappears, so to was chi-chan, the very foundation and source of Aoyama's novel, dissolved and eliminated. This book is so meta.
