I found it interesting that the narrator got irritated when Erica’s dad criticized Pakistan in a mean way. Even though he’s proud of his life in the U.S., he still feels connected to his homeland and tries to defend it and change the perspective of others. I think Hamid wrote it this way to show Changez's conflicted identity and how complicated it can be to balance pride in yourself with loyalty to his own homeland.

I found it interesting how Changez decides to take advantage of the ethnic exception clause and wearing a white kurta over jeans. This shows that Changez is aware of social rules but also clever in using his own cultural identity to guide them. This moment reveals his self-consciousness, and also highlights the tension between being true to himself and shaping the way others see him in elite part of the society.

I found it interesting that Changez and Erica share a deep understanding with each other. The setting of her boyfriend’s death makes her vulnerability clear, which deepens the connection. Hamid uses small gestures such as shared glances to build intimacy between them. I predict that this trust and closeness will shape how Changez approaches future relationships and his view of love after experiencing Erica.

I found it interesting that the author ends the story with Uncle Frank’s suicide because it solves the family’s immediate problems but leaves a strong, lasting impact. David’s feeling of relief, gratitude, and even a kind of love for his uncle shows how a child can see right and wrong in complicated ways. This ending shows David’s loss of innocence throughout the book and realizing that the world is morally complex.

I was really struck by the moment Gail tries to load the shotgun. Her awkwardness makes the scene tense, but it also shows how far she’s been pushed to someone who is forced into a role she was never meant to play. I think the author includes this to show how Frank’s crimes changes the family. I think Julian might try to use his power to get local officials to get Frank released or avoid consequences.

I found it reasonable of how Julian responds to Wes and Frank so differently. He scolds Wes but excuses Frank’s behavior, revealing his deep bias toward the son he wants to protect. The author shows this to highlight the book’s theme of power being used to protect reputation instead of justice. I predict Julian will try to take control of this situation, such as confronting Wes directly or trying to free Frank.

I found it interesting how Wesley's identity changes. From a parent to a serious, questioning sheriff. David realizes that his father's role as a sheriff is not simple. His careful attention to time and details shows how his sense of duty affects him. Len’s behavior shows secrets. The author does this to show how responsibility can transform someone, and I predict what David and Len knows is crucial to this case.

I found it striking how David imagines aiming the gun at Uncle Frank, thinking what might happen if he pulled the gun. It shows his confusion and anger. He wants justice for Marie but doesn’t know how to get it. Watson uses this scene to show that David is growing up, realizing the mix of power, responsibility, and confusion in the adult world. I think he may start taking more risks facing his family’s secrets.

I found it interesting how the author shows David noticing details, such as the honey, the radio, who he sat with, and his father’s body language. Also, he wants to be included in family matters, showing his growing awareness of adult secrets. I think the author did this to highlight his struggle between childhood innocence and adult responsibility. I predict he will face some harsh truths about justice and family.

I was shocked to learn Uncle Frank’s true nature. I believe the author wants to convey that due to the marginalized social status of Native Americans, many people felt entitled to treat them however they pleased. I found Wes’s reaction to this interesting. It reveals his courage and integrity, standing in contrast to his father. I think this sets the foundation of conflict between his father/brother in the future.

I think the author shows Marie not liking doctors to show her Sioux background and make the story more tense. He compares Frank and Wess to show different values in family. Wes’s small acts of racism show unfair prejudice. David’s admiration for Marie, Ronnie, and Frank shows his innocence. I think Marie’s sickness could reveal secrets or conflicts in the family that will change how they view each other later.

I find it interesting how David's dad is a different sheriff than what a typical sheriff would look like, such as no big gun. I think the author wants to tell that appearances sometimes can be misleading. It's about responsibility and doing what’s right. I was surprised by how dominating his grandfather is in the family. I think there might be some conflicts with the main character and his grandfather in the future.
