I love the old-style science fiction, and Alfred Bester is especially great at it. The stories are really pretty off-the-wall, and I'm only a quarter of the way through the book.

The author writes a long, repetitive introduction about how this is the most important story ever be told. He seems to believe it somehow. It continues to be repetitive so far. There is a bunch I didn't know about baseball in the war years, though.

An interesting story so far but also on the gory side. Sometimes the author wants to show off what he's learned about the mechanics of policework and will make a flat aside giving some facts about procedures or whatnot. Also there's a lot about Catholicism in this book and it doesn't come across as genuine.

I'm not reading this very quickly, but I am reading it. I said before it was like Sturgeon's More Than Human meets Ghostbusters II, and I stand by that. It's also like someone took the cliche 'the city is alive' way too seriously. Still, it's not a bad book by any stretch.

After having read the prologue and the first chapter, this appears to be very rah-rah-I-love-New-York. Also reminds me of Sturgeon's More Than Human, and possibly Ghostbusters II. The writing is lovely. We'll see how it goes.
