I LOVED The North Woods by Douglass Hoover and I just started The Sarvan today. 30 pages in and I'm hooked. WW1, German Prison Camp and a bad ass American. So far fucking fantastic.

Wow... much better than I anticipated. It started out with a trope that I assumed would be predictable, twists and turns have taken me on paths I was not expecting. Characters are changing. Things are getting weird. I'm enjoying it.

I'm only on page 26.
A man inherits a house from a relative he didn't know that well.
He's a total city guy. He's see a deer for the first time in his life.
His wife has more issues than National Geographic and is about as high maintenance as the space shuttle.
The neighbors are super square.
He walked into the woods and bird swooped by.
I'm still reading. Still reading. Still reading.

I needed to take a break from horror, but I never want to take a break from action. So far so good. An American soldier returns to Montana back from a couple rough tours in Afghanistan. He gets a job as a fish & game warden thinking it'll be relaxing and lovely working in nature. Nope, things start getting bad.

I started reading this immediately after finishing Coffin Moon. That's like having to play a piccolo solo after Metallica walks off the stage. Nevertheless, North Woods grabbed me immediately and I've been sticking with it and reading as much as possible. Bad things happened to some good guys and I can tell things are about to get a lot worse. I went into the book knowing nothing about it. So far so great.

Damn, this is one of those lovely books where you start getting towards the end and wish it wasn't getting towards the end.

The best book I've read in a VERY long time.
I've been holding off on this book because I didn't want any vampire books interfering with my The Vampire, The Tutor, and The Madman series I'm working on now. I was delighted to find that Keith Rosson's vampire is very different from my vampire.
The main character is exceptional. And just like my character he's a war scarred alcoholic. It's hard to read AND write.

I'm loving it so much I went ahead and bought the next one in the series.
Don't let the cover fool you. The main character is capable of mistakes, sadness, and humane humanity.
I am sooooo sick of action novels with PERFECT characters. (that's why I love The Mountain Man Series so much (Keith Blackmore).
I like rooting for imperfect heroes.
I nearly cried out loud "why the hell did he do that?"

I've read a ton of dystopian adventure novels. I have also read more than a few zombie novels.
As far as apocalyptical dystopian action goes, this is the best I've read so far.
As far as zombie novels go this is the third best I've read. First place obviously going to Keith Blackmore's Mountain Man series and second place going to Jonathon Maberry's Patient Zero (Joe Ledger series).

The first half of the book feels like a long beginning. Some people use the phrase "slow burn". However, I'm adamantly against burning books, even bad ones.
I am enjoying this book.
However, this definitely feels more like literature than horror.
If you want Dean Koontz or Nick Cutter this might not be the book for you.
However, if you like well written classic style literature, this might be good for you.

Not bad, but the main character is far too easily distracted by EVERYTHING

So far so good.
The details of flying are clearly very well researched OR the author is a pilot himself. Very believable and well written characters.

Being a HUGE Stephen Hunter fan, I just couldn't get into it.
It's like comparing Cinderella (the band) to Metallica.
