Reading Dr. Ranganath’s book about memory is so cool and full circle for me because I learned so much about his memory research during my undergrad, but I had no idea he was a trailblazer in memory! Also very cool that I found this book at an avid reader in Davis and he’s a professor at UC Davis! How cool

Learning so much from just a few pages so far. Making many pauses to drop my jaw and reread. It always amazes me how psychology is a new field and the progress that’s been made in the past 30-60 years is just a lot to fathom

Amy, I’m sorry… I was unfamiliar with your game. Kinda shocked. I don’t like being lied to but it’s sort of worth it. The most frustrating part of the book so far was that Amy got played and fooled but so far things are working better, yay :p

Nick is extremely jealous of his wife, her upbringing, and her parents… he’s kind of like the epitome of when people say they’ve dated men jealous of them and then also treat them bad. I’m finding this read very frustrating because he sucks so much

I feel for Amy, I’m only reading about their 3rd year of marriage and I’m pissed for her! I’d run away too. Nick sucks — he doesn’t care about or love her as much she does him. Him spending her money on their anniversary while she’s alone is fucking nuts.

Gilbert asks, “Why is male honesty in art seen as brave while female honesty is so repellent?” (p. 228) on Lena Dunham’s Girls. Such a great ask. People are so repulsed by shows like Girls and Insecure because it’s stories about women/young women by women.

Remembering how I watched celebrities break down through magazines and word of mouth as a child is dizzying. It’s interesting how today we’ll mock celebrities like Zendaya for intentionally being undetectable through media but like, are we forgetting how being perpetually visible ruined many women’s lives and reputations?

It’s so jarring how the porn industry is so deeply veiled into modern American culture. Especially frightening how violent it is and how it’s literally everywhere: on tv, in music, movies, social conversations, social media, etc. I really hate this

It’s crazy to read about scenes from the Kardashians when I remember watching it in real time as a kid! I haven’t thought about how they set the tone for modern day “influencing” and creating a bridge between that and modern day celebrity in a very long time. This is all so weird, disconcerting, and fascinating.

I heard of the reality show, The Swan, from the early aughts from a podcast this week and now I’m learning about it in more detail in chapter 5. Women undergo sometimes dozens of painful plastic surgeries and dental work and see their results at the end. Gilbert says that some women’s children did found them unrecognizable. I couldn’t help my curiosity and found a YouTube video of an end of finale reveal.
