"It occurs to me that there are many things in life that I've never considered doing. I suppose I hadn't realised that I had any control over them."

Twice in one day, to be the recipient of thanks and warm regard! I would never have suspected that small deeds could elicit such genuine, generous responses. I felt a little glow inside - not a blaze, more like a small, steady candle.

Eyelids are really just flesh curtains. Your eyes are always on, always looking; when you close them, you're watching the thin, veined skin of your inner eyelid rather than staring out at the world. It's not a comforting thought. In fact, if I thought about it for long enough, I'd probably want to pluck my own eyes, to stop seeing all the time.

"Beside my pain, all other pains seem false or insignificant. They are the pains of happy people or of people who are alive enough to complain. Mine is the pain of someone imprisoned in life, cut off..."

"So strenuously unrobotic is the astronaut's heart that it leaves the earth's atmosphere and it presses out — gravity stops pressing in and the counterweight of the heart starts pressing out, as if suddenly aware it is part of an animal, alive and feeling. An animal that does not just bear witness, but loves what it witnesses."
