What an awful read

Like a desert island book. Loving everything so far and reading it slow to savour the illustrations

Rereading, for sanity.

Six stories in, and normally I'd breeze through a collection like this, but every story is too heavy to bear; and although there's a spatter of humour and cheer, and it is undeniably readable, I do not necessarily look forward to reading the next story because of the said heaviness and anguish. But finish it I shall!

Spotted a characteristically sinister McEwan line: "Lying on the bed beside him was a venomous little card gloating over his downfall, written by his oldest friend, written by a man so morally eminent he would rather see a woman r**** in front of him than have his work disrupted." So vile!
