Im reading this in the most misandrist way— Leroux wants us as the audience to observe Christine as the object of obsession, the whole plot is centered around whether the phantom, or Raoul will have her as their partner; a victim of manipulation. But the way I am reading this, is in a sort of diva way, where men will always be the anguish to a woman's autonomy and individualism. Her choices are on 2 men, not herself.
