From the most recent chapter, Lascaux Cave Paintings, something along the lines of: “humans of the past hunted and gathered, and every healthy person had to contribute to the acquisition of food and water - and yet somehow, they still made time to create art, almost as if art isn’t optional for humans”. My favourite quote so far of this book and of any book in recent memory.

Got this book in a charity shop. The first fiction book I’ve read in a while. Each chapter is a short story, but Lorrie does such a good job of setting the scene and characters that you understand and empathise with them by the end of each one.

Each chapter is a short essay on some human related concept or idea. The writer explains the topic and gives his own perspective and/or recount of events, in an honest and relatable way. At the end of each chapter he rates the concept on a scale of 1-5, which allows us to recount our own memories and perspectives on these shared human experiences and give our own rating.

I’ve always had an interest in psychology but this is the first book I’ve read on it.

It’s a good introduction to person centred therapy. An easy read, psychological concepts broken down clearly with examples and anecdotes.

Irvin is a good writer

Good at breaking concepts down, not too difficult to understand, lots of references to psychological studies. But also lots of anecdotes some of which I find hard to believe.

Each section has exercises which are helpful in practising the techniques/reflections she discusses

Vivid and imaginative. Language is a bit difficult and sentences get very long sometimes
