I think I'm just trying to get my head around this present moment in history by looking at how prior generations dealt with the prospect of the end of the world.

This book is beautifully depressing.

We had to read this in high school. To prepare us for nuclear war and the prospect that we could die young due to circumstances beyond our control. I think this is why Gen X is the way it is. Kids today get active shooter drills and worry about climate change, which is horrible, but we had the prospect of sudden mass murder on a continental scale

Because I actively want to be depressed or something.

This book clips along. It's got some interesting concepts, but it reads like someone else read a bunch of older Stephen King and threw it in a blender and tried to write a Stephen King-like book. A lot of IT, The Body, some Tommyknockers, Firestarter.

When your week is blown into pieces and you're sick and need to recover, there are worse things do than fall into a Stephen King novel. Work for an hour, read for an hour, sleep for an hour, repeat.

As others have noted, this book is dry. It may be what the creators of the TV show licensed to use as the factual foundation, but it's a pretty stiff history.

I'm on my shit reading Booker nominees again.

Time for my annual re-read

Some of these pieces are better than others, but it's cool to see different perspectives on how different writers approach mystery structure.

I already know I'm going to end up skimming most of this book, It's good, but it's a lot.
