I love this book so much — more than words could ever describe

I absolutely adore Victor LaValle’s style. This is my first time engaging with his works and, suffice it to say, I’ll be picking up more in the future.

I’m glad that I endeavored to reread this. I made it a goal to read more Gothic literature in 2026 and wanted to begin with my old favorites. You really notice more interesting details in old literature the more you reread them.

Winifred is deliciously fucked up. There is a certain Darkness about her that reminds me of literary psychopaths of old — Hannibal Lecter, Patrick Bateman, Jean-Baptiste Grenouille. Just as Grenouille was obsessed with scent, Winifred is consumed by consuming in the most violently obsessive of ways.
