The US, since its inception, has been an expansionist power, though the practice has evolved over time. In earlier years, it was reserved for stretching control to the Pacific Ocean. Following the Civil War, Americans looked outwards for ways to influence territories with the prospects of liberty. As the Cold War intensified, economic, political, and military practices were used in attaining these means.
