Chapter 1
The US, since its inception, has been an expansionist power, though the practice has evolved over time. In earlier years, it was reserved for stretching control to the Pacific Ocean. Following the Civil War, Americans looked outwards for ways to influence territories with the prospects of liberty. As the Cold War intensified, economic, political, and military practices were used in attaining these means.

Introduction
The introduction establishes the books arguments that the Cold War and its major participants, the United States and Soviet Union, created a third world by intervening in the politics and conflicts of former colonial states. These interventions maintained the necessary levels of neutrality to persist in a “Cold War” while shaping the geopolitical world through the 20th century into the present.
