first 15 pages deal with historical legal and social context in the united states aka my bread and butter. also the previous reader(s) highlighted and underlined passages, so those are stories in themselves. at least with this first chapter (not finished yet, so take with a grain of salt), i wish there was more analysis confronting race and class rather than a general "[white middle/upper-class] women's history"

sometimes you read something and are so enthralled by how a person utilizes language. very obvious why she's one of the greats

I think I'll need to let this one simmer when I'm done and revisit it down the line. Generally enjoyable, but some parts feel convoluted and confusing -- I guess that's par for the course with Kafka. The intro by the editor poses "authority" as a consistent theme throughout the stories, primarily through dichotomies of adult/child, employer/employee, human/vermin, etc., so that's coloring my reading.
