For what it is I believe it is a good guide. It's very cut and dry which I appreciate as a good starting point and covers a wide array of both Japanese myth and folklore but also the Japanese political climate at the time. Though the pages are very same-y with how the author provides the pictures and the way they are provided

For a book from 1969 I would say its a good starting point for someone who doesn't know much about Japanese Mythology (like me!!!). I would say its more an encyclopedia of Japanese Mythology and Folklore with some history in there as well.

Not only is the author continuing to grasp at straws and draw conclusions with little evidence but she speaks in a lot of definites. Her discourse around mythos is mainly around Israel in the last half though I have noticed some Islamophobia with the way she talks about how Muslim culture has evolved from mythos as well as some quietly racist word choices. I was also surprised to see the word r*tard used in the essay

I was just starting to like this but now the author is speaking in definites about how the Gods of Paleolithic time have transformed in Neolithic time and is doing the academic thing of grasping at straws and specific interpretations for a desired conclusion. It's an interesting mindset to have towards the material but without knowing the absolute truth or having very good evidence all conclusions need to be cautious

I'll likely finish this tomorrow but I really like so far some of the perspective within it as someone who has read and studied myths at a relatively amateur level, though I also recognize archaeology and academic study has made leaps and bounds since 2005 and may not be wholly accurate and up to date as it once was

I feel like some of the medical things regarding your pets and yourself need to be double checked either by a medical professional or your own research. Also do not buy this book for children, there is a whole section dedicated to sex that I was fighting for my life on when I found out about it in public

You know what you can do with plants here is legit because this is before AI (sad we have to worry about that now). And while the language/phrasing in some of these is juvenile I do greatly enjoy the constantly changing font in this anthology as well as the time capsule to the early 2000s era

There are some minor writing issues with how the language is a bit too flowery for my taste and also the kinda frequent time skips but the chapters are easy breezy beautiful covergirl and I love that

This book is getting as heavy handed as my short Italian Grandmother with a wooden spoon. The author approaches women's struggles and trauma within her characters and book with the same nuance and delicacy as a metal bat in a rage room. Sudden, fast, and never spoken about again.

Honestly Native American Myths in this book aren't as bad, but I still can't forgive the small spelling errors and extra spaces as well as dedicating each myth to the proper tribe at the end of the myth instead of in the introduction. The author was completely fine with putting little verses and stuff under all the other myths, why can't we have the tribe dedication under the title of each myth?

Crazy how I find spelling mistakes in the Indian Mythology section when there were none in the Greek mythology section. Also having *all* the women swoon over these men is a little off to me. Hopefully I'll be done with this book and put it on my Purgatory shelf where it will be banished for the rest of time, and cursed to my eternal middle finger when I see it in bookstores from the Pro-Zeus Propoganda alone

I can't believe the Author of This Book is Gay wrote the following:

"I have horny cats to spay"
"XXX is transgender"

And this on possession:

"Letting something slither inside your body, you could see why teenage girls in particular found it so scarily compelling"

I am finding more and more how this author is imposing sexual characteristics and thoughts onto minors with no real business for it to be there.

Is it culturally insensitive to put Indian and Native American myths right next to each other?

I would say the book has a shallow grasp of social issues but that would be suggesting that it actually dips into social issues at all. While championed as a statement of diversity and feminism it is actually hiding misogyny, misogynoir and racism rolled into a coat of Tik Tok speak from the Pandemic. The Media from 2013-2017 borne from Twitter discourse is back for a sequel Post-Pandemic, wearing the face of Tik Tok
