I love poems that are funny, sharp and anchored in a story or memory. Willard is doing all of this. She’s such a brilliant observer. Her poems are not sparse, but also not over wordy.

I discovered her work through the delightful children’s book “A Visit to William Blake’s Inn: Poems for Innocent and Experienced Travelers.”

It’s a timely read for Lent and a good companion book to “Lent with Evelyn Underhill.”

I appreciate Hamman’s sense of humor and self-reflection when writing about difficult topics. Her ability to make medieval texts approachable and joyful is refreshing—I don’t sense any tone of superiority.
