Fantastically researched. The characters are vibrant and the story is engaging to a fault. Anderson uses the stories of saints to lend a sheen of magic and mystery to a very grounded tale.

Pretty boring. The narration style is amusing, but the story oscillates between depressing and frustrating. I get the feeling it is intentional. It doesn't actually make it better.

The author has really nailed the specific form of parental authoritarianism inherent to these types of high control religious group. So far it does a remarkable job of not throwing all religion out with the metaphorical bathwater. We also love to see an autistic girl winning.

Very funny and then suddenly absolutely devastating

The absurdity of the stories is delightful and works well to highlight the horrors of war by almost avoiding them completely. I like how the tone is jovial and conversational; the whole book is written in the cadence of a joke, with looping, sometimes even repeating prose. Enjoying it so far.

Fantastical and hilarious so far. I cannot get over how absolutely pathetic Holmes is. Despite being completely different characters, this might be the single most entertaining adaptation I have read.

I feel like I'm reading an early draft written by a very mediocre and perplexingly racist novice. The main character is introduced as a professional gambler, why is he trying to randomly be a detective? The premise is good but the execution is not.
