“I told him if there was ever a sale on skeletons, he’d have to take the wheel,” brought a tear to my eye along with the wistful reckoning with the tragic beauty of a moment of relief amidst a mounting narrative of deterioration and hopelessness.

The last few chapters have painted an unfortunately realistic portrait of its real-life counterpart.

And the book still has me in its throes.

How can one capture the cruelty of the world in such vivid, matter-of-fact, poignant turn of phrase.

At the close of chapter 24, if Damon must keep moving undeterred by all the rage and reckoning of a hard life in Appalachia, so too must I as I both eagerly and wincingly turn the page fighting back tears and the sort of empathy reserved for real life tragedies.

Wow! What a tale! To no surprise, I found my eyes watery with tears as the book came to a close. Cyril Avery, what a life lived.

The first time at the close of a section I could anticipate the swell of emotion that would linger until the next time I could pick the book up again.

I keep forgetting the book is a fiction; that Cyril and the events — tragic, comical, unjust, and ordinary — of his life are not the substance of memoir that the writers voice makes them seem.

I’m fascinated by a young man whose life, altogether different than my own, tells the truth of times gone by, the bigotry of the human heart, and the hopes and hungers that make us human.

Enticing narrative!

One of the most vividly engaging books I’ve read to date. In a few turns of the page, I find it forcing my jaw agape in surprise, my stomach into cramping from laughter, and unexpected appreciation ablaze within as the wicked prose carries me forward.

It’s so well written, immersive, and entertaining. It’s so enjoyable! And its protagonist feels to fast becoming a friend and not just an enjoyable character.
