holy anti feminism bro, the other female peers in this book literally only serve to bolster men or be competition for a man. disgusting and annoying

pg 182 "HPSV. human parasyphilian virus. causes lesions in the sylvian fissue the brain". WHAT??? the sylvian fissure is implicated for language and some reasoning skills.. why didn't you go for the hypothalamus, hippocampus, or nucleus accumbens, which are all much more implicated for sex drive 💀

as someone who went through deconstruction, i do like the depiction of how anxiety inducing and foreign (but also freeing!) it feels to start going against religious practice for the first time

i went into this book knowing i'd hate it, and every word confirms my distaste. it is so fucking pretentious and every sentence is so drawn out with prose and adjectives but it's not actually telling em anything at all

the amount of times that Mark has told someone to go fuck themselves.... i won't lie, it's funny, but it's so unwarranted 😭

unfortunately the fact that this is a debut novel does show.. but still, Weir is witty and fun and i'm enjoying the story. I really enjoy the science

i'm loving this oh my goodness. i think that everyone in the modern day would benefit greatly from reading the Affection chapter. we don't ever allow ourselves to reach the affection love anymore because all relationships are decided on so quickly to be "fit" or "unfit".

I wish that Eggers had spent a bit more time reflecting for himself what he doesn't like about a private company owning the government. I agree that it's bad - but Eggers seems to struggle to make an argument against it. If I were Mae, I would also be following along with the company, because no one outside seems to be able to make a compelling argument.

pissing me off that MC doesn't see reason at all or give a second thought to the criticism she's getting

Sticking with a lot of the same comments I wrote at the last pause point. The concept is there, and I would say the world feels plenty fleshed out, but the characters are confusing and unnatural. I don't understand the main character's motivations or inner being. And the social commentary is VERY blatant, there isn't a lot of nuance or subtly.

Went into this with high expectations that aren't so far being met. The concept is brilliantly interesting, and I've loved Eggers' short stories.. but I'm wondering if longer books aren't his strong suit. The dialogue is detached and inhuman, and there is some simple grammatical errors that I wouldn't expect to see from a seasoned author.

Currently not enjoying the book. I just don't know what the point is? And not in a satisfying, mysterious, or ambiguous way. The main character feels disconnected from the narrative despite it being from her first person perspective, and the tone is flat and monotonous. I'm having a hard time feeling engaged or interested in what's going to happen.
