A woman on a plane told me this was her favorite book, so I picked it up. I fully expect this to be some wealthy, wealthy,white-woman pseudo spirituality on an Eat Pray Love level, but if I don’t read it, I’ll never get to feel smug about it, right?

I’m rereading this because after watching, or attempting to watch, the Netflix Original Movie, I doubted my first 5-star opinion of this novel.

On my second read through, I am confident that my taste in books is still pretty decent.

I wish the movie could have truly captured the sincerity and terror of this novel. I’m glad to read it once again!

So far, it’s an interesting story, a good mystery, characters that are odd but not so over the top as to be unbelievable, but some of the lines are a little too spoon-fed. I

Natalie is 25% done with A Concise History of the Middle East
This is not a history of the middle east. This is a history of Islam, and a very selective one at that. If there is something negative about the religion, the author is quick to say “all agrarian religions were like this.” When there is a positive of Islam, the author mentions it in a vacuum, as if it were the only religion to have any positive aspects. This is unbalanced and does not deliver what it promised.

Cutter's "The Troop" is the only book I have ever laid down so I didn't get sick or get too scared.

So far, this seems like it may be just as disturbing. I am so excited!

Is it too late for this book to be renamed "Shadow and the Gods America Forgot" or something that explains that this book is 85% about a man caught up in a custody battle?

It took two hours to get to a god of any sort.

There was one line possibly worth being quotable.

As forgettable as most of this is, I'm still really glad that is it not Gaiman reading it.

I know I just started this audiobook, but I'm already annoyed by the author note.

I understand that there is an inherent narcissism to being an author, but Gaiman takes it that extra yard that makes him fully contemptible.
