I keep forgetting about this series and then find the next one and am pleasantly surprised. Think space opera with god-like people with magical powers in a post-technological future that's lost its knowledge of earlier times but fully threatened by it's own. Firefly-esque crew keeps saving the day, tho.

Timely post-apocalyptic look a how people deal with a post-viral outbreak world that just lost 50% of it's population and is just barely teetering along - both at the economic and political level and person by person. Sort of Ann Tyler-ish cluster of troubled adults trying to cope with their personal losses and somehow keep on.

Dystopian look at a future derived from our time, with "Patriot" Act-style government to the extreme. Total surveillance, no elections, punishment for thought crimes, legal caste system, and secret elite enclaves, perpetual war, and clandestine power struggles. The trump card - prison sentences with time travel to the past for convicts deemed too reprehensible for regular prison or indentured servanthood.

Early to mid 1990s look at Russia from a western journalist's perspective. Interesting interviews with contemporary public figures and their opinions on events of the day. Looks at the pre-Putin transition and it's complexities.
