When it first starts, it feels like a shallow mash-up of Hitchhiker’s Guide, Hunger Games, Running Man, and Ready Player One. You’re left wishing the author spent more time exploring things like Carl’s PTSD, and the real, harrowing emotions someone might feel if all of these dark fantastical things really happened to them. As it starts to ramp up, you’re given hope that the author will grow with the series.
