the first book of my ‘intro to the novel’ course at uni… good god can Defoe make his prose any more difficult to digest

the margins of my pages are choked by analysis in these couple chapters. I’m glad I gave this book a second chance

I thoroughly enjoyed the rich, vibrant way Shelley depicts the landscapes and mountains during Victor’s journey to Chamounix. I recognise a lot of Romantic influences in this and previous chapters when the characters are surrounded by nature. I also have been really enjoying the way Shelley utilises pathetic fallacy to reflect existentialism, the sublime, and also adhere to traditional gothic genre conventions :-)

Victor’s response to any tragedy in his life so far seems to be: “how do I blame this on my ugly gay son”

Victor becoming so adamantly driven by the urge to pursue his ambitions to the point that he neglects his relationships and himself is so unbelievably real
