Ok, interesting premise. The attempt to flip the traditional noir gender roles (the tough private eye is female, the femme fatale and the virtuous "good girl" who the protagonist stays away from on principle are both men) feels awkward and self conscious. Not awful, a decent time passer, might make for a decent movie.

Great book, a lot to take in. The POW camp in Siam is one pole of the book, and I love how we see the experiences of the prisoners and the captors reverberating throughout their lives. The love story, if it can be called that, that is the other pole is open to interpretation. I take a cynical view, and think reading that part of the novel straight would greatly weaken it.
