Such a solid book to read in this Halloween season

I’ve decided that I’m not going to individually review the rest of these short stories as I grow weary of Harlan Ellison. I’m going to finish the collection and leave a fairly scathing review.

My Brother Paulie: ⭐️ ⭐️
Had potential to be good and then he kinda blew it.

The Time of the Eye:⭐️⭐️⭐️
Would have been 2 stars but I bumped to 3 because it’s weird af

From the Land of Fear: ⭐️ ⭐️
This one is a couple of short stories within a collection of short stories. In the forward H.E admits a lot of these are not his best works. He also talks some crap about other sci-fi books written at the time and I will say this, Hitchhikers slander will not be tolerated. Not a huge fan of this one.

“I grew weary of the curates perpetual ejaculations”

All humorous quotes aside, the curate is a total coward

Wanted in Surgery: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
A story of becoming obsolete. Really liked this one. Very fitting for our times.

Deeper than the Darkness: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Protagonist has the power to set anything on fire with his mind and doesn’t want to be used as a nuke. Good story for a one time read.

The Thousand and Second Tale of Scheherazade:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Plot summary woman tells super long story to husband to prevent him from killing her after 1 night of marriage (it’s a tradition). The moment the story starts to suck husband is like ok time to die. The story within the story is basically Sinbad fan fic that’s full of lots of “pshaws” From the husband (he doesn’t buy a word of the story)

The newspaper vendors are on that grindset

Bright Eyes: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
H.E wrote this one based off a drawing someone did for an expo. For that reason it’s very atmospheric but lacks depth of story imo

The Discarded: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Space leper coloney. I enjoyed this one quite a bit.

The Crackpots (1 and 2): ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Kind of like Fahrenheit 451 except instead of purging books they’re purging crazy people. There’s a bit more to it than that but this one was interesting.

Sleeping Dogs: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Same universe as the crackpots. Completely different vibe. This one feels lovecraftian. I liked it a lot

Very tense

Delusion for a Dragon Slayer: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Honestly would have been a 4-5 star but it got crazy sexual towards the end lol

A whole group of people just got vaporized

I realized after starting to add my reviews for each individual story that it deletes my previous one as I progress so I’m doing each review in a separate document. I’ll add all in my final summary

World of Myth: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2
I feel like this would make for a really interesting longer format of novel if H.E kept the atmosphere and maybe changed the character dynamic a bit. Not bad but not my favorite.

Eyes of Dust: ⭐️ ⭐️

Not my favorite of these short stories so far. Interesting setting and concept but not much else.

Sam Was a Friend of Mine: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Space circus but don’t lose your head!

I Have No Mouth & I Must Scream: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

That story starts off this collection quite well but is an incredibly bleak listen for a 7 am start to my workday. Very good story but very depressing.

Really strong start on this one.
