I've enough money to buy food and drink, I've somewhere to live and enough free time in which toe dream, write - and sleep - what more can I ask of the gods or hope for from Fate? I had great ambitions and extravagant dreams, but so did the errand boy and the seamstress, for everyone has dreams; the only difference is whether or not we have the strength to fulfill them or a destiny that will fulfil them through us.

I am at the stage of life where I have grown comfortable with the fact that it's okay to not finish books. reading should be something I enjoy and if there are books I can't get into, it's okay to let them go.

Interesting but some parts can be rather dry.

Every summer I dream of ghosts, of towns full of ghosts. And nothing the ghosts ever do in these towns would have an impact on reality.

t struck me that perhaps a lot of people you see walking about are dead. We say that a man’s dead when his heart stops and not before. It seems a bit arbitrary. After all, parts of your body don’t stop working - hair goes on growing for years, for instance. Perhaps a man really dies when his brain stops, when he loses the power to take in a new idea.

...There’s time for everything except the things worth doing. Think of something you really care about. Than add hour to hour and calculate the fraction of your life that you’ve actually spent in doing it. And then calculate the time you’ve spent on things like shaving, riding to and fro on buses, waiting in railway junctions, swapping dirty stories and reading the newspapers.

Because that’s how things happen. Because in this life we lead - I don’t mean human life in general, I mean life in this particular age and this particular country - we don’t do the things we want to do. It isn’t because we’re always working. It’s because there’s some devil in us that drives us to and fro on everlasting idiocies.

Because after all what is a road like Ellesmere Road? Just a prison with the cells all in a row. A line of semi-detached torture chambers where the poor little five-to-ten-pound-a-weekers quake and shiver, every one of them with the boss twisting his tail and the wife riding him like the nightmare and the kids sucking his blood like leeches.
