“Whatever mainstream western liberalism is, and I have no useful definition of it beyond something at its core transactional. Centered on the magnanimous enlightened image of the self and the dissonant belief that empathizing with the plight of the far away oppressed is compatible with benefiting from the systems that oppress them.”

Really really loving this one and finding a lot of validation and insight on the male dominated culture of land management. 💗Bobbie Scopa💗

“There is a bigger scam at work here, which allows other scams against refugees to thrive. This is the grand scam of artificial nation-states, hard borders, rising walls, passport hierarchies and visa regimes- all built on the deluded notions of ‘purity’ vs the ‘other’ and of an ‘us’ vs a ‘them’

“The notion of ‘being realistic’ when talking politics is absolute nonsense. It has less to do with finding comprehensive solutions than it does with acquiescing to processes that are convenient for those in power”

Big interesting! Talking a lot about neural pathways and human evolutions predisposition for fear. Your brain remembers negative experiences with way more emphasis than positive ones! Apparently it takes many more positive experiences to outweigh one negative experience which is spooky dooky

Good info! A lot of logistics about specific union people in the 80s but still really good!

One of my favorite questions the book poses is about political empowerment of the group. It asks if providing services as an outsider at some point placates a group and takes away their own political organizing power. I thought this was really interesting cause I’d never heard it put quite in these terms before.

She’s talking a lot about fostering senior dogs and it literally made me cry this part is so so sweet. I love the way she is interpreting lessons from the dogs too. She said something like ‘just because you have a lot of needs does not mean you don’t deserve so much compassion’
