Everything that's happening on the walk is blending together but one thing that my mind keeps going to is wondering about Garraty's past. He keeps saying that he doesn't know why he signed up for the long walk but surely there must've been something that prompted him to make the decision.

One of the overarching ideas of this book is the mindset of avoiding failure/minimizing risk/playing it safe. It's rational and smart and certainly the mindset you want to have when thinking about money. It's just that this mindset pmo when I see it. I've applied this mindset to so many other areas in life for the longest time and living by it has kept me in a box for so long. It's likely why I'm not enjoying book

I've read this intro somewhere before. My reaction is still the same. Money is just money. What matters is how it's spent. Dying with millions in the bank is not a flex. It's like you got the means to do something but then decided not to do anything at all. I still have hope for the rest of the book but this intro is putting me off.

Sure, some of the ideas in the big book by goldstein are believable but the concept of doublethink being exercised by everyone in the party is asking for too much imo

This ch. made me think ab my worldview. I'm like Julia's character in a lot of ways. I just accept big things, like society, as they are and focus on the things I can control, like what I can do to be happy. But what about Winston's character? In the past I've sometimes thought about what if the system as a whole changed. But I just don't think it's something that's possible or worthwhile to really pursue seriously.

I'm sure glad I'm reading this right after animal farm. The similarities are remarkable. Except this time I'm seeing the world out of the eyes of a sheep. Or a cow. Or a horse. And where snowball is of the name goldstein.

The zoo analogy is kinda crazy. The amount of times I've chosen the safe, comfortable route over the risky, adventurous one
