Ok I'll admit that I've literally crawled through this book this week. Not even halfway through. I think I stopped caring about the plot somewhere. I'll keep going though....

There is absolutely no way to rush through this book and not loose a good grasp of what's going on.

But I'm not complaining.

I'm enjoying the way everything is unfolding. The story concept is pretty wild, I didn't expect the writing to carry it but so far so good.

Jasmine Holmes did not come to play. From page one she had my undivided attention as I tried to piece things together and when I finally figured out what exactly had just taken place, I realized that I was only about to close out the first chapter.

Now here's to hoping the rest of these coming chapters meet or surpass my now super high bar.

‘Apprehension is the mother of our mistakes, and tries to warn us before we make them, but we don’t always listen to our mothers.’

There were a lot of mixed reviews on this book. A lot of people said it was boring or slow but I actually appreciate the pace because although it’s not exactly a page turner, she’s giving you details you’ll need to understand what’s taking place as the story progresses. I still like it. Slow or not. I’ll probably finish this today.

Less than 100 pages into Daisy Darker and Alice Feeney is already putting on a masterclass. The way she's threading psychological tension, family trauma, and decades of secrets into the very fabric of this story has me completely hooked.

Pity fades with age. Hate is lost and found, but guilt can last a lifetime.

This story is some of everything so far. Tragic, exciting, funny, colorful.

Mary Monroe definitely knows how to pull a reader in and keep them right there. I haven’t wanted to put this book down all day.

Mama Ruby ain't no joke. Everybody needs one of her on their team.

Character development already shining through and I'm only just getting started.

Maybe there are no concrete truths and lies when it comes to human beings. Maybe it’s all somewhere in between because we all have our own versions of events.

-And why do I listen to him when he tells me to do something? It’s your own fault. You teach people how to treat you.

So far this story is developing well. Anticipation building. I’m locked in and won’t put this down until I get to the bottom of the issue at hand.

The spirit’s perspective is so evocative. The way Akwaeke takes something like anger or jealousy and turns it into these vivid physical images is just 🤌🏾. It makes the spiritual side of the story feel so much more real and gives the whole thing so much texture!

"Our brothersisters have always possessed the cruelty that is our birthright. They stacked their bitterness like a year's harvest; they bound it all together with anger, long memories, and petty ways."

I'm already sucked in. Learning about traditional Igbo spirituality, and it has the nerve to be interesting.

"You're smart, pretty. But you sit around waiting for some man to tell you that instead of telling the man you want all them things. Beautiful things don't ask for attention. They command it." - Vee
