"I can’t be certain that Frank and I would have felt the same depth of love and tenderness for each other, had sex ever been part of our story. Sex is so often a cheat, a short cut of intimacy, a way to skip over knowing somebody’s heart by knowing instead their mere body. So we were devoted to each other in our own way."

A pretty interesting story so far ... would probably prefer a different narrator. But that is such a personal taste thing and I understand why they try to get the author to narrate, if possible ...

Most of what I'd heard about NLP made me suspect it was some cultish/pyramid scheme thing. But I'm enjoying this read. Especially the linguistic analysis. HOWEVER ... why oh why did they use a male voice in this audio book edition when there are enough self-references by the author to make it sound WRONG?? So I end up hearing a bloke calling himself Sue. Which worked in the Johnny Cash song but in a serious book? No.

Infectious optimism and enthusiasm about his craft but not very specific or helpful in other ways so far. I guess it gives an insight into Bradbury the man and writer ...

Am really enjoying this. Acute observations. Serious stuff but with just the right amount of light-hearted, wry humour ...

I am so reminded of Elizabeth Strout's "Olive Kitteridge": acute character observations & the depiction of a relatively small community through the eyes of one particular family. Both books feature a vignette-like chapter structure, each of which peels back another layer to reveal significant connections and history. Both novels also share blunt and crotchety protagonists who seem to be hard to like at first glance.

Having loved Our Souls at Night so much, I've been looking forward to my second Kent Haruf book. I'm totally mesmerised so far by the gradual unfolding of the plot and characters, and reflecting how much this book reminds me of one of my other favourite reads Olive Kitteridge in its depiction of a marginally likeable protagonist.

Making so much sense. Confirms much of my own thoughts and research to date in relation to causes of (and ways of managing) my chronic brain fog aka ME/CFS. Am so impressed by the book I'm ordering my own hard copy to go through out all again after I've finished listening to this audio book.

As usual McEwan has me hooked pretty much from the first page (actually from the opening lines in this case!).

I really want to love this book based on the interview I heard with the author but either the book is not for me now or not for me forever. I like the concept of the Joycean writing but like another reviewer find it contrived and tedious so far.
