Huh? First time I’ve been confused about a line in this book but I refuse to look it up

Everything that Wells had ever known or thought or loved drained slowly down the wall behind him. Damn. Little one-off lines both spoken and narrated in this scene make it very clear he was going to die and he knew it too, incredibly grim little conversation that could have meant absolutely nothing

Quick little one chapter session. The sheriff is too pure for this kind of violence, he just wants to be a loving husband. Definitely a strong overarching theme of greed leading to ruin here, both for the innocent and the ones partaking. Interesting stuff

Starting to think Anton is sort of representative of the consequences of moral corruption rather than someone with any sort of stake in the money situation. Scenes of violence are described in such a grisly fashion with the gunfight seeming more like a traumatic event than a cool action packed sequence.

I wish I could annotate the library copy. The coin toss at the gas station needs to marinate for a while. I love the foreboding atmosphere in the cops realizing they’re dealing with a maniac they don’t have the means to deal with on a spiritual and emotional level

Hooked very early on. Intrigued by the sheriff’s inner monologues reflecting on evil beyond what he can comprehend. Suspense is built up nicely both in the current moment and for what’s to come.

Extremely compelling opening. Scenes of violence described so viscerally that my stomach turns reading them. Ive seen the movie so it’s gonna be hard to not try and compare it to this the entire time im reading. Interesting style of writing that’s gonna take a minute to get used to.

Damn. Newly dead character had any trace of their being scrubbed from the planet much like demon’s mom. Lots of parallels between the two deaths, both being an overdose that suddenly shatters any semblance of purpose for life that he had in his mind. Brutal set of chapters, a lot of callbacks to happier moments earlier in the story to contrast with the current nonstop misery

Heartbreaking but amazing section of the book after the temporary hiatus I took. The part of him talking to the art teacher in his car made me want to do great things in life, and it hit like a truck seeing him go right back to his addiction after all these wholesome interactions with positive people in his life

Really reached a point of not wanting to stop reading here. This drug-induced haze era of his life is probably the most interesting the book has been yet, even if it was prefaced as being a road to ruin so I know nothing good is in store

God damn. RIP to a real one, idk why this author is so fucking good at writing about funerals. Real roller coaster of emotions through the last few chapters

Can’t say I’m too large of a fan of where this is heading. This foster situation going to shit hurts 10x more than the ones before because it was so good I was so happy for my sweet baby boy. Why did I pick this book back up I could have just pretended it all turned out okay

Slowly but surely trudging along, my friend Angelica smart may receive her copy back by 2027. I like seeing my baby boy going through a good time in life but am clenching my asshole while reading now since I know a collapse is coming soon.

Read for the first time in like a week, feeling like less of a useless dumbass now. Still at this lull in the story where things are kinda slow but it’s because life is sort of going well for demon at the moment. I liked the bittersweet reunion with the peggots where he can sense him and maggot kind of going separate ways in their personalities and lifestyles as they get older.

Something is actually going well in this book, holding my breath for how quickly that’s probably gonna change. The story kinda hit a lull when he visited his grandma but it’s starting to pick back up. I loved the little paragraph of demon contrasting himself with the middle school kids who had proper upbringings and are all book smart but don’t see the world the way he does due to experience

How this young rapscallion manages to maintain his moral compass at all is beyond me. He’d be totally justified in having killed someone by this point yet he feels awful about just wishing death on somebody.

Mr. Copperhead is finally as angry about his situation as I’ve been since about page 20. Good for him. He’s wise beyond his years for all the wrong reasons, and I especially liked the mention of him being the man of the mccomb house yet having to sleep in the shitty dog room. Im realizing how much in my own life I take for granted the more I read this

Don’t really like how it was insinuated way earlier that horrible shit is gonna happen to Emmy later in her life. The Knoxville parts feel like these wholesome little escapes from hell where demon is teased with normal childhood experiences. His emphasis on the feeling of being unwanted at the start of the trip, only to let his guard down and then get thrown right back into it upon their return broke my heart

WOW!!! Was gonna read more but had to cut this session short because that chapter was so fucking good. I was too stunned to really do anything after the fact I mean my goodness. There’s no kind of sad in this world that will stop it turning are you kidding me? Jesus.

Awww he made friends at the foster home nothing can go wrong from this point. I find it interesting how fast forward is framed as another kid who didn’t really have a chance even though he’s introduced as quite the bad influence on the other boys. I also like how it doesn’t feel as though demon is entirely alone despite constantly being in a shitty situation. I want to give him a hug

Getting emotionally invested. This poor young lad didn’t have a chance to be a child.

Starting to really submerge myself in the story when I read this now, also really taking my sweet ass time with it. Very fleeting moments of childhood innocence suddenly broken up by retellings of horrible abuse (ugh men 🙄). The part where demon first has to confront homophobia directed towards his best friend that he previously turned a blind eye to was very powerful

Very intrigued so far. Characters, setting, and tone have been established remarkably well and I’m slowly but surely acclimating to the writing style. Had to read back over the part of the moms boyfriend talking to his friends because that shit totally flew over my head at first, so I need to remember to have the thinking cap on when I read this going forward. One nation under employed gave me a giggle

Read the first chapter, really good introduction to the narrator. It might take me a second to adjust to the writing style here and will also take 7 years to finish the book but I foresee myself heavily enjoying it. Love the wit and humor so far

Not sure if this revelation was meant to be so predictable or not. Regardless, really interesting set of chapters showing life 15+ years after the collapse when things have kinda settled down. Life seems depressingly boring at this point but there are fleeting moments of beauty scattered throughout

Interesting to read about how quickly everyone at the airport found a semblance of normalcy after how abruptly civilization collapsed. Oddly a really hopeful take on 99% of the people on earth dying, with it being framed more as the beginning of a new era of humanity as opposed to the end of the world. Also it seems like everything we knew about Clark’s life up to this point is completely irrelevant now. Word limit

Refraining from saying too much on this last part to avoid spoilers. Very haunting little segment considering we know a decent amount about the life of the character involved. Damn. Very tragic and bleak close to a heartfelt scene established way earlier in the book.
