This novel is too good to be true. It is really agreeing with me.

This is exactly the change of pace I needed after war and Peace. I was hesitant about the letters motif but It is really working for me. It is so ridiculous that i am enraptured by this novel.

This final volume before the epilogue can be explained like this.
1. Some of the most beautifully written descriptions of the human experience.

And

2. The most repetitive boring philosophical takes on history and war you have ever read.

Tolstoy really was beating the dead horse this volume.

I am sick of hearing about the french army’s dwindling numbers ever single chapter with little to no progression.

The end is so close yet so far

I truly believe prince Andreys death is one of the most beautifully written and touching death scenes ever conjured. In other words, I am devastated, as if my own brother has died.

Prince Andreys death scene made me sob and was perhaps the most beautiful thing ever written.

This volume was definitely a change in pace. I enjoyed it. The mob scene was grotesque but amazing to read. Andreys delusions on his death bed and thoughts are captivating to read. Though pierres arc throughout this volume just felt like an episode of psychosis but maybe that is the goal. Overall very excited for the Last volume and epilogue.

The bee chapter was a thing

Slow reading day. Only read at lunch was too exhausted after work to read needed to let my brain melt. Excited to wrap up war and peace this weekend. The philosophy bits and burning of moscow this read were really enjoyable!

Tolstoys rant chapters about military strategy and napoleon’s cold seem a bit repetitive it was charming at first but I feel he is beating the dead horse a bit… otherwise I enjoyed this part onto the last part of volume III. Pierres military experience is losing me a bit but I feel it will make more sense in due time.

Pierre you are not the man for war I fear.

Old prince Nikolays death actually upset me. This I did not expect.

I fear something bad is on the horizon. I am uneasy.

Volume II was extremely enjoyable. She was growing on me but I’ve decided I despise Natasha. Natasha gets way too much grace for her age despite her selfish, hurtful decisions. Her confrontation with Sonya about Anatole highlights this: Sonya is barely older yet has far more maturity and common sense. Natasha is not evil just frustratingly dumb as bricks.

So, I am devastated. Prince Andreys interest and proposal to Natasha is so out of character for him. She is the exact type of woman he seems to despise. Though his sudden change in heart towards her right after he proposed was in character for him, he always idolizes people until he actually gets involved with them and their life. Nat and Andrey are a bad match in my opinion she fits much better with Pierre or Boris.
