The protagonist is of Jamaican parentage, but there is nothing else in this book to identify him as Jamaican or Black, save a stereotypical penchant for seduction. No Jamaican cultural touchstones, no extended family, nothing in his tastes in food, music, books, film—nothing. I keep forgetting he’s Black, until the (white) author points it out specifically. Very bizarre perspective.
