joe has died of kidney failure. the whole town gathered to mourn him, but janie feels a new sense of freedom. she enjoys being single, and while many men have tried to get in with her, she’s in no rush to marry. now she’s met tea cake, and has taken an immediate interest in him.

janie is starting to realize that her marriage to joe is holding her back from being the woman she is. also he’s hit her twice at this point, once in front of a crowd???

janie and joe starks are now in the new town and joe quickly starts building up. the people vote him mayor, even though many feel like he treats them the same as the white people. janie is working in the store, but you can tell that she doesn’t quite feel happy.

so far janie has married logan killicks; a man who has a solid job and his own land, but jaime has no feelings for him. her grandmother dies, and while her words stick with her, janie knows she has to leave. now she has run away with joe starks and remarried

i remember reading this book forever ago in high school and wanting to give it another chance because i didn’t fully understand it then. now even with only being in chapter 3 i’m seeing that i missed a lot

so much has happened in the span of two chapters good lord.

cousin charles is clearly here to take advantage of them and needs to back tf up. while i do agree that merricat is a bit wild, that really isn’t his business.

now gaining some background and wow, did not expect it to take such a turn

i decided to go into the book blind, picking it purely because i loved “the haunting of hill house” so much. as it stands right now i am
very confused.
