Life Itself: A Comprehensive Inquiry Into the Nature, Origin, and Fabrication of Life (Complexity in Ecological Systems)
10-yrs ago as an ignorant one in the world, I opened up this book. Now after all this time: 1 yr in the Life science DP, 3 yrs in the maths DP, >5 years dealing with “complex systems”(first in the CS DP and then having a peak into the Physics DP ). Just so accidentally I had put in one month’s serious devotion reading Kant — I came upon it again— with a big

A weird setting: the Copy cannot differentiate sequence of events. Wonder how this will be used ( to save storage space? take advantage to utilize a randomize algo to save computing resources (quick hash, distributed storing, etc)?

A mixed-up of Neromancer and Ready Player One, without offense to the chronicle order. Will hold and passively read a page or two by chance.

I'm getting tired of the fetish of grand-scale particle simulation. Large number itself is nothing fancy about it so has no fantasy value (except producing awe for one time or two). The mystified existential querying from the Copy itself is not provoking enough for me, to be called true dilemma. Will continue.

Start reading when my French is still quasi-B2-reading level fresh, to now where my French is in shreds. Brontë is still not a breeze to read. Possibly 10% escaped from me. Jane Eyre is a piece of childhood memory keep coming back. Villette is Jane Eyre in a bleaker world — more cold rocks, more twisted, layer and layers of labyrinth swirling on. A heart ripping experience.

Until now, violent, violent and violent… Nothing more. I suppose this is what Pulp is. But “imbecile” just as Jiz put it. The protagonist is an animal. 10g out of hell and shook off the girl. What a masterpiece. (Disgusting. But will read on

Blindsight (Firefall, #1)
Science is used as witchcraft. The author being an ex-biologist did more comprehensive for physical human body process, less so for other science. The chain leap of quantum—transcendental—information theory is too vague to bear. (Shown page turner quality. The protagonist’s objective view of human behaviors is relatable. Keep for later, among other fantasies.

If you are to toss every tricky design problem to a omnipotent A.I… I don’t think any serious modern sci-fi writer dares to do this. (Still hanging

Forward the Foundation (Foundation, #7)
I guess when Asimov wrote this he channeled his old age sentiments into this world. Conspiracies of betrayal, losing contact with the world, stubbornness in rejecting help, desperation of being beaten by young man coming up. It’s a old man’s book. The ages crawling upon me when I read it. For not a real literature master, inevitably Asimov exposed his own weakness.

I’m irritated by the all the slang talks. It’s like chewing gum and not spitting out. (Should be the language barrier. I won’t feel irritated if in mandarin, whichever dialect/talk it is). Wintermute shows up, though I didn’t see it coming but then I find I don’t care either. Probably the whole book is wrong for me. Pause here for the unseen future.

The second prequel deals less about the formation and development of the psychohistory -- so far, rather it is that Selden deploy real world strategies based on his “intuition”. Before he become the scientist he has become a politician. Some kind of internship in the real world?

In the winter of 2020 I found the vocab an issue but now, thanks to the previous several sci-fi I've read this Autumn, I find it smoother to read. Sharp insights here and there, giving out the shine of a classic.

I was told this one is the best fantasy on cyber attack. The first mission does not contain any hard core tech details I was expecting. That said, beautiful writing, difficult Vocab, will continue because I'm my own sadist in reading English. Would classify as “urban fantasy” or even “Nihon fantasy”.

Seems the source of the modern fantasy “self-fulfillment prophecy”. Not that I’m against the “usefulness” of it — but never something universal, needs the backdrop of personal context. I myself ride with this theory smoothly in life.

Everywhere everyone is recommending this book. At 7% the protagonist entered into some old corner and kicked some door and punctured some window, tried to get security in and start… a gun fight? The last moment his cowardliness crawled up and he jumped out of the window. I have to flip back to make sure this is indeed the logic. (Lots of new words. Good exercise for me. Currently reading with suspension of doubt
