so excited to never open this book again

Every time I start to read a book all my library holds suddenly become available and ruin everything. I don’t have anything on hold at the library right now. I have one audiobook checked out from hoopla, which I will finish before it is returned. I’m planning to attempt to finish The Song of Achilles so I can finally give it a low rating and be free and then I hope to settle in with @nervesofsteel

So I may not come up with a real review by the end of this because 1) I’m no good at reviews and 2) the experience of reading it is going to be weird because I beta read it a long, long time ago. But I hope to provide commentary as I read! Right now: Eagle-eyed Goodreads friends of mine named Kate will notice that I told them I was going to read a book that is not this one. Sometimes life throws you a curveball!

Also obsessed with the reviewer who didn't finish the book and gave it one star because the main character (Jewish woman with a big-deal rabbi for a father) compares the idea of telling her family that she writes Christmas novels to the time her friend (a gay man with two (2) mothers) came out of the closet.

It's so convenient to have books on your e-reader when the other books you're supposed to be reading are just out of reach. Right now I envy fictional man Daniel so much. He has a dream job. Room and board, not customer-facing. What more could you ask for? Darcy Coates creepy people please hire me

shout out to the popsugar reading challenge for specifically suggesting this one as their booktok recommendation so I would finally pick it up again in nearly a year. i will never involve myself in tiktok directly unless it's a Kesha song

I'm trying, casually, to do the PopSugar reading challenge, and I'm reading this for the social-horror book, and I'm not sure I'm deriving any form of joy from this. I'm a fifth of the way through and it's like. I get it. I live here. I'm not stupid. Have some subtlety? I don't know. I should have said, "Whatever, I'll let the clock run out on whatever 'social-horror' is and read regular horror instead."

I KNOW it's not the point of the book but when you've got a fictional high school student saying "I fake-dated him for political reasons" and the politics is like. High school. then I just think everyone needs to get a hobby

I feel like I'm at a very awkward high school reunion and we're all telling each other low-stakes calculated lies that we can all see through but if we call one another out then we open ourselves up to callouts so we have to respect the slightly off versions of the past we are presented with and deal with it

I'm not paying any attention to the dates and I love that for me. No rules!

oh yeah i'm so close to being able to start the next book for the book club.

I have learned something about myself, which is: Sometimes reading a book for a reason (like a book club) inspires me to read other books and get distracted from the book that I'm reading for a reason. Oops. Anyway I'm back at it again at Krispy Kreme. Also I have like three ebooks checked out that I'm 100% not reading and I'm so sorry to all the other patrons of my local public library.

Just wrapped up a chapter that subverts some expectations somewhat built up by previous ones, so I think this is where it gets really interesting. Not in an "ooooo this wild twist came out of nowhere" way but in a, you know, actually interesting way.

I'm reading this for a book club that I joined in part to read books that I wouldn't otherwise necessarily learn about or choose for myself, so so far I think that's going according to plan. I'm only two chapters in so far.

I think the person at USA Today who called this book "pulse-pounding" has a medical condition.
