You would be really pretty if you lost weight… his face was gentle and earnest, as though what he had really said was, “you remind me of a sunset in my native Senegal” It was confusing. All I could muster …to this insulting comment was “thank you”.
I was hurt but I rationalized…

My heart broke for the author after reading...’Later that night, my father said, “You’ll never step foot in this house again if you act on your feelings. You’ll never finish your education,”... and ‘I’ll do anything to erase this part of me.’. ...

...but knowing that even if I’m dying, until I actually die, I am still living.

I do reluctantly believe in pro choice although it breaks my heart because I also believe I shouldn't tell someone what they can/can't do with their body but that sentence just really rubbed me the wrong way as this woman also is.

This woman kinda sucks so far. Her immature attitude and selfish irresponsible actions toward everyone kinda make me sick. Blaming it on her morher's death is a cop out. One particular part in the book where she's gearing up for her hike 'I got an abortion and learned how to make dehydrated tuna flakes and turkey jerky...' Like ending a life is some little chore to check off her list so she can get on with more(cont)

I read this book in high school and after learning it is a 3 part series wanted to revisit it. The story is just as beautifully descriptive as I remembered: 'the sand sparkles like water though the early morning breeze has dried it to powder...purple flowers cover the ground where two days ago there was nothing but camel thorn...winter sky is blue-green above the lavender line...

Only on page 28 and have already learned so much more than other books read in their entirety. The introduction of the automobile to San Francisco in the 20's and the love hate relationship people had with their cars was very interesting. I can tell already this book is very well researched along with the talent and care it took writing it.
