I absolutely love how Shelley sets up the action, the beginning of the story. Instead of diving right into the story, she creates Cpt. Robert Walton to introduce the story.

When I read this brilliant book my mind sets alight with the liberating tinder of ideas.

Jesus of Nazarene was another in a long line of Jewish rebels who defied the Roman empire. He was born in Nazarene, not Bethlehem. Decades after his death, Israel openly declared war on Rome in the Jewish Revolution. For this, they were annihilated. Still, modern rebels can learn a lot from the Jewish Revolution. Jesus was probably very poor and illiterate. These are some things I am learning from this great book.

Learning a lot about Midwest, USA history through the novel's narrator; including the epidemic of Spanish Influenza which killed thousands of conscripted Midwesterners before they left for WWI.
