'll admit it. I have long been a fan, even a friend of Rabbi-Shmuly Yanklowitz so was excited to learn he had a new book coming on the Book of Jonah. From a social justice perspective. It arrived on his birthday. A good sign. I started it this weekend. It will not disappoint. The first chapter begins with a question, "What does it mean to protest?" because that is exactly what Jonah is asked to do. Go to Ninevah and

I started with Part 11 because I wanted to have the historical context. I've now gone back to the beginning. It is proving to be an interesting read.

I have now read Part 1 and 2. I continue to grow in fascination as I realize how many of the projects I do are based on ones the Rebbe started.

What a great discussion today on Chapter 8. People really like the stories but are having a hard time doing the exercises. So we did Chapter Eight's exercises as a group. We all have interests and are therefore interesting people. Reminds me of Frederick Buechner's definition of call--where your passion meets the world's greatest needs. Come join us next Shabbat as we finish the book.

Studying this book with my rabbinic chevruta (friend and study partner) as a second read together with our spouses. Aimed at lay readers, this book is an accessible way to learn Jewish text and how the tradition became layered. If you know the story of Lilith or the story of Abraham smashing the idols, you know midrash.
