Chapter three. I’ll come back to this another time as it’s not grabbing me just yet.

James is on page 210 of 320 of Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin): A Memoir
Sly is an arsehole and it’s weird that he thinks Ike Turner is such a creep when he acts just the same. This is such a weird autobiography because he just seems out of touch with his constant sexist anecdotes.

This is an odd book. Sly often starts stories only to realise he doesn’t remember what happened. There’s also a fair bit of him replying to old reviews that have obviously annoyed him for some 50 years, or at least as long as he researched his autobiography.

The short bios are great. Each one ends with the suggestion to pick up related releases from Now Again for more information on the artists. Nice product placement.

The first half of this book (which is just shy of 100 pages) is linear notes for the CD. It gives context and a quick history of Zambia and where the music came from. It’s by no means complete, but presumably the next half will fill that out.

He’s mentioned “when MTV arrived” a few times as a reason the rock press changed, but it’s not explained what that means. How did MTV arriving in Australia change the Aus music landscape for magazines? Hopefully it’s touched on in the next chapter…
