This is unbelievably riveting and mind-blowing, and almost impossible to put down.

“Tomorrow at this time she would be Anna Kendrick, the Duchess of Harndon.” Well, that just yanked me out of the story. Not that Mary Balogh could’ve foreseen it over 20 years ago, but still. I had a good giggle.

Every time I think this book—and Gerard—is about to improve, something happens and I just have to roll my eyes.

“She had been patronized too often by Lord Howe and Lucien not to recognize it now.” And there it is. Good, I’m glad it was meant to come off that way.

There’s something about the relationship between Katherine and Gerard that squicks me out. I think it’s the inequality. Francesca and Edward were equals who respected each other. Gerard is clearly taking Katherine for granted and treats her in a way that reads a little patronizing.

I suspected going in that the mystery would take precedence over the romance, especially since it was a 2nd-chance type of story, but I didn’t imagine it to this level. Struggling with this one

Ok, either Temperance is lying or the backstory is about to be retconned. Isn’t Mary Whitsun the orphan Temperance bought from Mother Hearts-Ease when she first came to the Home?

The first part of this book doesn’t really hold up to modern tastes—it takes Edmund way too long to get it through his head that Mary says she doesn’t want him around—but the overall plot is clearly the early template of Slightly Dangerous, so I can’t be mad.

Before I get much further—because I think I’ve been pretty harsh on this series so far—can we just take a moment to appreciate this book is basically Batman meets Pride and Prejudice?

I’m 90% sure I know who’s behind the new wave of lassie snatchers in St. Giles. And I’m 100% sure the reveal is going to make putting up with Megs worth it. Least favorite heroine of the series, trumped only by Temperance

I spoke too soon. So far, this is entrenched in just the kind of uninteresting angst that I hate about this trope.

I’m so relieved this book starts 2 years after the previous one. Hopefully Godric and Megs have had a chance to heal some—still-grieving widow is one of my least favorite tropes

“Missing were Temperance Huntington, the new Lady Caire; her mother-in-law, Lady Amelia Caire;” I swear, I’m emailing Hachette’s editors a guide on forms of address. Now that Lord Caire is married, his mother becomes Dowager Lady Caire, not Lady Amelia Caire.

“he was all out of deceits and whiles” Whiles?!? I say again: does NO ONE edit at Hachette???

I really don’t like Silence taking it upon herself to call Mickey his given name, when he asked her not to.

As someone who has to fight with people to get them to pronounce my name correctly, that rubs me the wrong way.

Shouldn’t the form of address be Lord Griffin and not Lord Reading? Or does he have a title in his own right? Doesn’t anyone edit books at Vision/Hachette???

I kept thinking all this book wanted was someone with consumption. So glad to see it come to fruition 🙄
