The stream of consciousness style of the writing has felt strange to me. That mixed with looking up so many unfamiliar historical and English references has made this book slow going. I’ve made it this far. I’ll keep going in short sessions alternating with another book I find more entertaining.

Denise is reading A Walk Across America
I enjoyed the trek and the people along the way. A lot of reviews seemed to think there was too much about Cooper, the dog, "his forever friend". I don't agree. I've loved dogs this much in my own life. It's hard to believe since yesterday, I've had a dog that lived over 50 years ago and wasn't even mine on my mind. I'm a softy. I won't deny it. Story took an unexpected religious turn at the end. Oh, well.

Important character development in this volume. I wonder where it leads? I look forward to Volume 9's release!

I'm loving this old school naturalist's daily entries. I started reading them in December so it's going to be awhile before I finish. In the meantime I've decided to follow his example and record at least one observation of the nature around me in a Field Notes. WDIS = What Did I See Today. It's making me pay attention to things I otherwise wouldn't register. Thank you, Mr. Teale.

Denise is reading Satan Came to Eden: A Survivor's Account of the "Galapagos Affair"
I thought it was a very interesting story although probably biased. We will never know the full truth.

This is an emotionally difficult and upsetting read. But I want to know how things turn out for the boy/main character. I don't know how anyone who has experienced war firsthand lives a normal life afterward.

Started a few days ago and it’s going quickly! I think a person with a “shining” would have to learn to use/control it or go crazy or become an alcoholic or addict. Danny has a tough situation and past.

How can a writer keep a story going and keep it interesting with nothing but conversation , observations AND horrify you on a LONG Walk? Now I think Stephen King can do anything. I'm all in!

I identify with some authors more than others. Authors are people. How could it be otherwise.

I've read the first two. A Perfect Day For Bananafish left me puzzled. I sort of got it but read reviews for my own clarification. Sad. Uncle Wiggily In Connecticut left me sad too. It affected me. At first I felt such dislike for Eloise. Later I had such empathy. Hurt people hurt people. Very well written but can I take seven more stories like this?
