Damn, the second short story was just nowhere near as strong as the first.

Sometimes after playing games, reading genre fiction or manga, I will read something and think, Oh right, this is what real writing is like.

Bear Mcbearington is on page 110 of 293 of The Age of Innocence
'The very good people didn't convince me; I felt they'd never been tempted. But you knew; you understood; you had felt the world outside tugging at one with all its golden hands - and yet you hated the things it asks of one; you hated the happiness bought by disloyalty and cruelty and indifference. That was what I'd never known before - and it's better than anything I've known.'

When your book is over 1,200 pages long, you can get away with setting up Chekov's Gun 100 pages in.

This is a very information dense book with tiny writing, I timed myself a couple of pages, did the maths and it looks like a 58 hour read, not including rereading passages for clarification or note taking.
Please pray for me and my non-existing working-memory.

"until a few days ago he was happy and tranquil, and he could be again, if only this monster would vanish from sight, move out of his confused thoughts, cease to exist. But no. That girl is always there. He will not touch her nor will she touch him; even so, and without the slightest contact, she foreshadows certain destruction for him, because his having met her will break him into pieces and crush him into dust."

I've read a few Nobel Prize for Literature winners now, and so far this novel might be the first one from a laurate, where I've thought, "yeah, I get it."
