Great books often have a moment where they transcend to that next level. I was enjoying this a lot, but not sure I would hold it with me for long. Then I just hit this chapter, written from the perspective of the best friend, and it was one of the more beautiful things I can remember reading in some time.

Ok, I won’t lie, this sounds a little too close like Never Let Ne Go, which I didn’t love.

Listening to this on audiobook. I’m trying hard not be judgmental, and it’s success with me will depend on this being more noir than Twilight. Early results have me skeptical.

Well that began very differently from what I expected.

Homage is one thing, but there comes a point when your book becomes too dependent on other authors. The amount of name dropping of horror authors is dispiriting, let along naming every chapter after Lovecraft. Act like you belong here.

This book got soooo dark so fast

Just started and very excited. So far this is everything I wished the Master and Commander series was and it wasn't.

Finished the first section and it has held up to all of the hype. So far though, it is a book of short stories, and the format changes dramatically from here.

Finished the first full chapter and was blown away. Also wondering how on Earth he could keep this up for the entire length of this book.

Oh my god! I make a habit of not reading much about a book before starting it. If I had I might have known something about the huge meta-narrative surprise that was waiting for me halfway through, but then again, it would not have been a surprise! What a treat!
