I don't even know what I heard about this book or what I expected going in. I just know I was lucky enough to wait only a short while until it was ready to borrow and then foolish enough to wait until it was due the next day to start it. Now I'm a quarter of a way in and know this book will absolutely destroy me when I finish it 🥲

As much as I'm enjoying this book, the government agency operating with no oversight ("desperate times and all that") and busting into people's homes without a warrant...........bit on the nose ! !

The tawdry gay caricature and obsession with Ingrid's virtue..... this book is set in the 21st century 👀

Why is this book, written in 2013, making a joke about pesky redskins

I wasn't 100% engaged with this book until I realized these weird little narrative quirks were on purpose. I'm pretty sure I know what the author is doing, but it actually makes me more curious about how this story is going to be told.

I'm digging the themes but for each, I can think of another book that did it better
Castle madness: The Starving Saints
The [feminist] danger in the woods: The Woods All Black, The Unmothers
Brutality, violence: Lady Macbeth, Victorian Psycho

The one theme that I can't substitute is its least developed - siblinghood and all its strange loyalties

THIS DUDE SUUUUUUUCKS

I spend too much time criticizing law enforcement to be into (essentially) cop/nurse romance. But my god. The male lead really makes me question how anyone could be capable of being attracted to straight dudes (and then I remember the straight man I married and my blood pressure eases)

Ok so the author definitely had a thing for Carlysle. Possibly Jasper.

My borrow returned when I had twenty minutes of the audiobook left. The hold is several months. No one could possibly understand what I am going through

The Big Evil is defeated, Siiri has gone on her journey, Aina has come into her power. And yet there's 40% left? Why are we introducing new threads instead of tying them up? I'm so lost.

It's not that she's a bad person, it's that the inside of her mind is insufferable. An omniscient narrator would have been a blessing.

I'm trying not to let my inner polemic snarl. This is very sentimental and purple and doesn't align well with how new words naturally come about, which makes things feel forced, contrived.

But so what!! The moments resonate even if the words don't always. I'm trying to sit with the sentiments. If nothing else, it is a good audiobook for falling asleep (non-deragatory)

I was gonna dnf on p 126, but I was thinking about my criticisms against this book and decided I need to finish in order to really explain my grievances.
Then I picked up the book again, read four pages and my opinion of this book sunk lower.
