Aiken's novels create a memory -- lots of pieces of story pop up way after you have read one. The language is one of the best things about them. I am finding nice similarities these days in Wood's Incorrigible series also.

I have actually reached the end of this beautiful book, but hoping to get a correction done on the edition info here before I type in a review. I will say now, this one goes on my shelf for keeps :)

Smooth, good writing. My first novel by the Todds. Good dialog, good characters, good tension with Bess as military nurse. Downside, too many chance meetings with key players in the case -- it seems the story's pace is too fast and maybe causing the authors to place too many people in her path too often. That aspect is a little too glaring. Overall I am loving it though.

Not sure I can tackle Olive so soon after Bjartur of Summerhouses! Help me, reading friends, will I find some sympathetic characters or warmth here?

This book has taken me pleasingly by surprise...I had thought before it was part of the werewolf movement or something...wrong!

The text only has 542 pages in it, so this total page info is wrong. Even including notes, the book is only 572 pp.

Much of the initial part of the story gives us a view of the world around Janie rather than immediate descriptions of Janie herself.
